Top Filipino featherweight contender Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly will be tested by China’s “The Stalker” Xie Bin on August 2 at ONE: DAWN OF HEROES in front of his compatriots at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.
Kelly is all-in on his preparations knowing he is set to face a formidable submission artist in Xie. But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t enjoyed his training for the upcoming match.
“We actually have something we call ‘The Team Lakay Way’ in preparation for our matches,” Kelly said.
“It actually means to enjoy what we do while doing our best with every intense training session. It removes the stress and anxiety we feel going into the match and at the same time we tend to do better as well.”
In every training, Team Lakay athletes study their opponents first before creating a training menu that could provide an advantage. Then they prepare and execute a well-rounded training plan for each day of the week.
“We have different training schedules per day,” Kelly said.
“But the first step is getting to know our opponent by studying their previous matches and list down their strengths and weaknesses. We have cardio, sparring, independent training, weights, and agility training spread throughout the week.”
Team Lakay Head Coach Mark Sangiao knows that training for a match can become difficult and stressful. That’s why he reminds his athletes, like Kelly, to enjoy and have fun during the preparations to uplift their spirits and give added motivation to do better.
“The team’s approach on how we train affects the results of our actual training,” Kelly concluded.
“We don’t just immediately train, we actually spend a little time talking with each other and joke around for a bit. That sets the mood. The training regimen itself is hard but we choose to have fun while doing it because it is who we are.”
