ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua “The Passion” Pacio is confident that an impressive win for his Team Lakay Brother Eduard “Landslide” Folayang in Manila will give him the golden ticket for a third shot at the ONE Lightweight crown currently owned by Singaporean star Christian “The Warrior” Lee.
The former ONE Lightweight World Champion Folayang is set to lock horns against multiple-time lightweight champ Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez at ONE: DAWN OF HEROES which takes place at the Mall of Asia Arena on 2 August.
This will be Folayang’s second trip inside the ONE Circle this 2019 after losing his ONE Lightweight World Title to Japanese legend Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki in their rematch at ONE: A NEW ERA in Japan last March.
For Pacio, the lost against Aoki fueled the determination of Folayang to reach more in the sport. The determination that also made him confident that the 35-year-old Filipino star will come out victorious in his battle against Alvarez.
“He’s even more motivated now as he lost his belt. He really wants to get his belt. I see that he’s very hungry to get back to title contention,” said Pacio.
“He works on his techniques even if there isn’t a scheduled fight. In terms of conditioning, we know that he never have problems with it,” he added. “100 percent I know that Eduard will win this August.”
Pacio also believes that Folayang’s tremendous strength both physically and mentally will be his advantage when he faces the American star.
But on top of that, the 23-year-old strawweight king thinks that other than Folayang’s incredible determination, his mindset will play the biggest role that will lead him to victory.
“He’s always ready. He’s like a machine, he doesn’t tire out. He’s not just ready physically, but also mentally,” said Pacio.
“We see his determination. He wants to be at his best all the time, and his mind is untouchable,” he added. “When he found out that it’s gonna be Alvarez, I immediately saw that fire in his eyes.”
With ONE: DAWN OF HEROES just less than a month away, Pacio admits that there is a lot on the line for Folayang in his clash against Alvarez especially that it will be held in Manila, in front of his countrymen.
“There are a lot of possibilities when Kuya Eduard wins. He can get a title shot, especially since there isn’t a winner yet in the ONE Lightweight Grand Prix,” Pacio stated.
“This is his motivation, especially since the match will happen in the Philippines. He’ll do whatever it takes to win in front of the Filipinos.”
