Leading women’s athlete from Baguio City’s Team Lakay Gina “Conviction” Iniong is excitedly anticipating a phone call from ONE Championship.
Iniong, who is coming off a split decision victory against Jihin “Shadow Cat” Radzuan of Malaysia at ONE: CLASH OF LEGENDS in Bangkok, Thailand last February, revealed that maintaining her winning ways is one of her goals as a mixed martial arts competitor this year.
“I want to follow-up on the start that I had this year. I am really excited to showcase what I can do once again in the cage,” said Iniong.
“I am in very good shape. I never stopped training. I just kept on working on different aspects of my game from striking to grappling.”
With ONE Championship set to return in Manila for their biggest card ever assembled on Philippine soil on 2 August, the 30-year-old Baguio City native would like to have a spot at ONE: DAWN OF HEROES, which takes place at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.
“I really hope to be a part of that card since it’s been awhile since I last competed in the Philippines,” said Iniong.
“It’s a different feeling when you’re competing here. You’re more determined to put on a show for the Filipino fans.”
Iniong’s impressive victory over Radzuan was the perfect start she was looking after finishing her 2018 campaign with a loss against former ONE atomweight World Title challenger Istela Nunes at ONE: BATTLE FOR THE HEAVENS in China back in July on last year..
The six-time Philippine national wushu champion also revealed that her confidence at the moment is in an all-time high especially now that she’s training hard as well together with her Team Lakay comrades who are already scheduled to display their talents on 2 August.
“Being a member of Team Lakay, I never stop learning. I always pick up new things from my coach and teammates cause we always experiment,” shared Iniong.
“I had a great start this year and that was crucial. It set my momentum moving forward, I am more focused in training and I’m more determined to reach my dreams of becoming a World Champion.”
With less than a month to go before the blockbuster event in Manila, Iniong signified her intention to compete at ONE: DAWN OF HEROES as she did not suffer any serious injury and at her best form at the moment.”.
“I’m in great shape right now and I’m ready to compete,” shared Iniong. “If they offer me to fight in Manila, 100 percent I’ll say yes.”
