If the throng of screaming fans who showed up at the MGM Grand lobby for the Manny Pacquiao vs. Adrien Broner Grand Arrivals on Tuesday, January 15 was any indication, it’s safe to say that Las Vegas and US boxing fans definitely missed the ‘Pac-Man’.
Amidst the impressive crowd who waited hours prior to boxing’s only 8-division World Champion was another Filipino boxing legend, the current WBA super bantamweight champ Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire.
Donaire, who captured his recent title by defeating Ryan Burnett last November in Glasgow, UK shared his thoughts with this writer on this weekend’s main event.
“I think Manny has the speed and the power to make this fight go his way,” said Donaire and further added, “I give 70 to 75% chance to win this fight. I even think he can cruise in this fight if he uses his speed.”
Donaire does acknowledge Broner’s skill and timing as his main weapons in shocking the world and defeating the 40-year-old boxing senator. “Broner has the timing to make the fight difficult for Manny, but I definitely think Manny will impose himself with his speed and power.”
Given Pacquiao’s age and that he is eleven years and several wars older than Broner, Donaire downplayed the 11-year age gap and alluded to legends like Bernard Hopkins who fought until he was 51 and pointed out Pacquiao’s conditioning and discipline as far as taking care of his body and staying in shape as his antidote to father time.
