In their much anticipated rematch, Matt Mitrione advanced to the semifinals of the Bellator heavyweight grand prix after snatching a razor thin majority decision victory against rival Roy Nelson in the main event of Bellator 194.
This was the first meeting of the two heavyweight giants after being signed by Bellator. They first fought each other under the UFC banner with Nelson winning by KO way back 2012.
This time Mitrione made sure that results will be different as he worked early with his jabs and straight punches allowing him to build an early lead on the scorecards.
The 39-year-old Mitrione took a commanding lead after two-rounds as Nelson’s eye started to turn red from Mitrione’s accurate punches.
In the the end, despite Nelson’s effort to turnaround the fight, Mitrione manage to hang on up to the final bell increasing his victories to 13 wins and will be fighting next the winner of the upcoming matchup between light heavyweight champ Ryan Bader and Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal.
In one of the featured bouts, Heather Hardy is back to the winning column after his unanimous decision victory against Filipina-American Ana “Hurricane” Julaton.
Julaton who was making her promotional debut earlier against Hardy failed to execute her gameplan while Hardy found decent success with her attacks especially with her right hand.
After three rounds, the final scorecards were 30-27 twice and 29-28 as all there judges saw Hardy as the winner, improving her record to 2-1 while Julaton drops to 2-4.
